Would it be possible to give us some guidance or an information link for the use of NRT in acute cardiovascular events? We have attended training but think that new guidance is now available but we are not sure from which source. |

This query concerned clients who have to reset their quit dates. Suppose a client sets a quit date, then shortly after they quit they have to cease using their medication due to side effects. Say they lapse for a short period while new medication is secured but they are keen to resume their cessation attempt as soon as possible and set a new quit date shortly thereafter. How should that case be recorded? |

Could you please let me know if there is any research into giving lower strength NRT patches to pregnant women? We have experienced situations where GP's have insisted on using the lowest strength possible due to it being unclear about the effect of nicotine on the unborn child. Our experience is that these women often struggle and continue to smoke. Thank you. |

We currently have a lots of clients who relapse after drinking alcohol. I was wondering if there was any good research / information about why people do this and how we can work with them around this.

Hope you can help or point in the right direction - do you know if you can set up a PGD that ultimately allows for specialists to hand out vouchers (under a voucher scheme)?
So combining the two (PGD + Voucher Scheme) so to avoid having to hold stock and transport medications etc

GMTV yesterday morning announced a short piece on the news about an ostensible cancer risk with overuse of NRT products. Kate Gegg (Service Manager/Lead in Tobacco Control) emailed them to find out more and they sent us the details of a link from The Times where it had been reported > Link
I have advised our specialists to continue their practice of providing NRT as per NICE guidance and to reassure clients that the article which the news item came from intimated that the risk is still lower than actually smoking but the issue was not to overuse these products.
We have no idea if this research has been published and whether the research has been subjected to the proper critical scrutiny. I would be grateful if you could offer a statement from the SCSRN as we are starting to get a stream of queries from the general public. | response |

Is there anybody out there who has information / articles / research on routine co testing for all pregnant women?
Is there anyone doing this and do you have a protocol set up for this?
I would be grateful for any info rather than reinvent the wheel. |

My colleague is seeing a client who has been using the (NRT) nasal spray for approximately 1 year (a bottle a week). Although he has stopped smoking my colleague is addressing with him to come off the nasal spray. I recall this being covered before with a strategy that involved increasing the dosage of the patches whilst decreasing the nasal spray and then decreasing the dosage of the patch once off the nasal spray. However, I cannot find a published paper on this. Does anyone have any evidence-based sugggestions on how to wean off the nasal spray? Also, is anyone aware of any long-term health effects of prolonged use of the nasal spray? |

I’m just wondering if you or anyone can shed some light on a query I’ve just received. It is from a workplace Line Manager and it is in relation to the legalities of staff using e-cigarettes at their desks, she wants to know if it is okay to do so as they can use NRT at the desk? |

Can I ask if there is any other data on smoking rates during pregnancy that gives detailed break-downs (i.e. by Local authority area). I am aware of the Infant Feeding Survey 2005, but the data is only by country, not region.
I look forward to hearing from you. |

I would like to know if any services are including 'cut down to quit' with NRT as part of their PGD, and if they have included any products other than those currently licensed (e.g. Nicorette gum/inhalator or NiQuitin CQ gum/lozenge) as part of the gradual cessation regime.

I was given a newspaper cutting last year about "third hand smoke" breathed in by babies from clothing or furniture. Nicotine and cotinine were found in urine and hair of 49 babies, even when the parents smoked outside. Has any more recent research been done on this - or where can more information be found? |

Can I have the validity and reliability of the questionnaires listed on the research resources section? They are:
1. Dependence questionnaire (Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependency [FTND])
2. Past quit attempts questionnaire
3. Smoking motives questionnaire
4. Motivation to stop smoking questionnaire
5. Health questionnaire
6. Research consent form
7. Mood and Physical symptoms questionnaire
8. Physical activity questionnaire
9. Social support questionnaire
I will be using this for my research proposal and would be grateful if you can help! |

We are changing the way that we deliver smoking cessation to pregnant women. The service has always been provided by smoking cessation advisors, not midwives, using a home visit. This has proved costly, not very effective and difficult to manage.
We are starting to work with Childrens Centres and Sure Start venues.
Is there another service that has experience of providing smoking cessation for pregnant women from these venues? |

Page 17 of the new Department of Health monitoring guidance (NHS STOP SMOKING SERVICES. Service and Monitoring Guidance – October 2007/08): "Smokers who participate in an assessment session but fail to attend for treatment should not be counted but those who have consented to a programme of treatment, attended their first session and have set a quit date should be included".
Does this therefore mean that any clients who attend only the assessment session (one session) and no treatment sessions (maybe because they are unable or do not wish to), but consent to treatment and have set a quit date are to be counted? |

At Walsall Stop Smoking Service we would like to subscribe to Addiction and Tobacco Control journals so that we can keep up-to-date with current research. However we can't afford the subscriptions. I am wondering if there may be some way for several services to share the subscription cost and for several of us to access the journals. |
